Avoid Private Equity-Owned Dental Practices – My Experience at Smile Generation's Peachtree Dental Group

I strongly advise against visiting dental practices owned by private equity (PE) firms. Their primary objective is maximizing profits for shareholders, not prioritizing patient care or financial transparency. While PE-owned clinics may appear modern and efficient—offering features like online patient portals and streamlined booking—you cannot trust that their practices are ethical when their business model incentivizes profiting off your health.

I initially chose this practice because it was in-network with my dental insurance and I was due for a routine cleaning. However, my experience has led me to seek care elsewhere.

Issue #1: Misdiagnosis & Unexpected Charges
At my first visit, I paid my expected $50 copay but was then told I had gingivitis and required a specialized cleaning, which resulted in an additional $275 charge that my insurance wouldn’t fully cover. This diagnosis was shocking because I’ve consistently seen a dentist twice a year throughout my life, maintain excellent oral hygiene, and had never been told I had gingivitis before.

Before proceeding with the cleaning, they pulled up an Excel sheet showing my estimated costs—seemingly transparent, but in reality, a high-pressure tactic. At that point, I had little choice but to consent, as they had already alarmed me about my health and I'm literally sitting in the chair with the bib and the glasses on- ready to go. There was no way to independently verify my insurance coverage before proceeding, leaving me in a vulnerable position.

Additionally, I found Dr. Bryan’s bedside manner lacking, which made the experience even more unpleasant.

Later, I sought a second opinion from another dentist, who confirmed that I did not have gingivitis. This raised serious concerns: Was I intentionally misdiagnosed to justify more expensive treatments and increase visit frequency (from biannual cleanings to every four months)? It certainly seems possible.

Issue #2: Long Wait Times & Poor Scheduling
Appointments are difficult to book within a reasonable timeframe, and once you arrive, expect to wait well beyond your scheduled time. The office is consistently overcrowded, making each visit frustrating and inefficient.

Issue #3: Billing & Refund Issues
A family friend also happened to have had a bad experience at this practice. She was charged for services that were never performed and promised a refund—yet after a month of repeated calls, no refund was issued. She had to visit the clinic in person to get her bill corrected. However, the office had no problem promptly calling her to warn that her balance would be sent to collections if she didn’t pay on time.

Final Thoughts:
This experience solidified my decision to avoid PE-owned dental practices altogether. These clinics prioritize profits over patient care, misdiagnose to inflate charges, and create barriers to fair and transparent billing.

Instead, I highly recommend seeking out a privately owned dental practice where you receive consistent, one-on-one care from the same provider—someone whose priority is your health, not corporate profits. If PE firms continue to dominate the dental industry, we will see higher costs, lower quality of care, and fewer people able to afford necessary treatment.

Protect your health and finances—choose independent dentists whenever possible.
